and Happy May! I don't know about you, but I cannot believe that we are already in MAY!!
I want to give a special shout out this week to Grandma Angie as the kids affecionately call her, well actually me too ;). She has been awesome at promoting our growth in reading every Monday. Here she is playing with the kids to work on ending sounds and sight words.
Reading:
We learned about the strategy of questioning. First, we had to learn the difference between asking a question and telling something and BOY have we gotten good at it! :) We read lots of books about growing gardens to tie into Unit Study.
| We ask questions before we read about things we are wondering, during reading, and after reading because that is what good readers do! |
Letters and Sight Words:
We learned about the /ch/ sound this week!
Math:
We worked and played A LOT with addition this week! Your kiddos have a awesome understanding of how we put numbers together. We have one more week and then we are going to start subtraction.
| This is called Walk the Line and it helps us see the combinations to make numbers. |
| We made number sentences with pepperoni pizzas! |
| We sorted dominos by their sum of dots. |
| A number balance shows us how equality works i.e. 8=6+2. |
| And how the sum can go on either side of the equal sign i.e. 6+2=8. |
| We used blocks to make numbers. |
| We sorted our domino cars in the parking lot. |
| We made number sentences with fish. |
| We solved problems with manipulatives. |
| Ms. Alyssa was so helpful! |
| We solve problems by drawing pictures. |
| We can add THREE DIGITS without regrouping!!! We did this in laps this week. |
| We are being creative with number sentences. |
| We are using ten frames to make 10! |
| And of course we read and then created our own 10 little fish. |
Unit Study:
We finished our unit on plants and learned about the plants life cycle.
| Thank you Walker for bringing a plant for us to dissect and see real roots! |
| We checked our beans growing. |
| I absolutely LOVE when students draw what they are learning all on their own in the writing station. :) |
| We created a great life cycle book. |
| We learned lots of facts about plants. :) |
5MTOW:
Our final assessment of PALS will be in 2 weeks. Please review the rhyme I am sending home this week, "It's Raining, It's Pouring". Make sure your child has it memorized and can point to the words as he/she reads it. Then, point to words in the text and have your child tell you what the word is. Finally, give the word list and have your child read the words to you. This will be our last hurrah at practicing our concept of word.
APEX FUN RUN!
This was such a BLAST! :)
