Week of Learning 3/14

Reading:

We read fiction books about rabbits who learn to listen and summarized. 

We summarize by putting one hand to the right of our head and telling about the character; one hand to the left and telling about the setting-that's the beginning. Then we touch our bellies and describe the problem in the middle of the story. Finally, we touch our feet and describe the ending or where the solution took place.

We also read about Leprechauns on St. Patrick's Day! :) 

We also learned the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts. 

Letters and Sight Words:

We learned about the letter Y and made some super cute Yaks! Of course I forgot a picture. :( 

Math:

We started learning about the coins-their names and their values. Please practice this at home with real coins. The more practice identifying those tricky coins the better when we start adding up the values of a set of coins. 

Unit Study:

5MTOW:

Removing beginning sounds of words is tricky for some kids. What you want to do is say a word like tower and ask the child to remove the beginning sound (/t/) and ask what word you would have left? (our) Continue until this is really easy! And move on to taking off the ending sounds.

Week of Learning 3/7

Kindergarten Carrollton Corral!

Reading:

We have started learning about non-fiction texts, which are books we read to learn. Fiction books are books we read for enjoyment. After reading, we took our topics of frogs and butterflies and wrote details we learned under each umbrella (topic). We then took a fact and created a class book.

Letter and Sight Words:

We made some cute? vultures! 

Math:

We finished learning about time to the hour and had tons of fun playing various games!

Unit Study:

We finished our unit learning about maps. They created a map of the playground and shared it with friends to make sure they were correct. 

We compared and contrasted maps and globes.

5MTOW:

Create subtraction story problems orally. Here are some examples (they move from easier to harder):

* Aubrey had 7 cookies and then she ate 4 cookies.  How many cookies does she have left?

* Aubrey has 10 stuffed animals and she shared some with me. Now she has 6 stuffed animals. How many stuffed animals did she give away?

* Aubrey had some jellybeans. She gave 8 jellybeans to her cousin. Now she has 8 jellybeans left. How many jellybeans did she have to start with?

We sure are "March"ing into Spring!

Reading:

We read tons of Dr. Suess books this week and graphed our favorite. There's a Wocket in my Pocket won! 

 

We also partook in some great activities to celebrate one famous author!

Math:

We started a unit on time. We learned about the analog and digital clocks and made time to the hour. 

We talked about the time of day we do things.

We talked about how long we do things.

On our Everyday counts board, we started adding problems to solve now that we are over 100 days of school. 

In small group math, we worked on addition problems and we could solve by using manipulatives or by drawing a picture.

Unit Study:

We started a unit on maps. We talked about how maps show a birds eye view from the top.

We talked about how maps show land and water.

We made a map of our classroom!

* Aubrey has 3 cookies and then because I really love her I gave her 3 more cookies.  How many cookies does she have altogether?

* Aubrey has 2 dog stuffed animals and she went to the store to buy some more and now has 6 stuffed animals. How many stuffed animals did she buy at the store? 

* Aubrey had some toys in her room. For her birthday she got 5 more toys and so now she has 8 toys. How many toys did she have in her room to start with?
