Week of Learning 9/21

Reading:

We have read some great books by the author/illustrator Eric Carle. We learned the jobs of the author/illustrator (ask your kids to show you our motions for these! We also learned that print is the words we read on a page and we look at the pictures to help us read the print. 

We have quickly introduced all the letters of the alphabet and created this poster. :) 

 

We also are continuing with the Student of the Day and we add their name to the word wall. 

Unit Study:

We started learning about the Fall season.

 

Math:

We continued learning how to sort by size, shape, and colors. We started by sorting our ball attributes...

Then we made a mess and talked about all the ways we could sort it during math tubs...

 

And then practiced at the red table during rotations...

Finally Ms. H asked us to show her how to sort at her table...

Laps:
We wanted to teach you about laps! Laps have been a great activity we do in class to teach us lots of things like counting by 5s, counting by 10s, making sets of 5, making sets of 10, and place value. 

Right after we come back from lunch, we walk big laps around the room while counting/singing to 100. Each time we pass the tub, we grab a cube. 

When the song is over, we make 5s with Friends at our table with our group. 

Then Ms. H goes around and counts how many each group had, collects them, and meets us at the carpet.

After that, we count  how many we have by 5s. Then we make 10 towers and count by 10s. 

Finally, we see how 6 ten towers and 8 ones creates the number 68.

Week of Learning 9/14

Reading:

We had a lot of fun reading various Wheels on the Bus versions like Seals on the Bus, and The Wheels on the Bus to School. While reading each, we've discussed the front cover, back cover, spine, and title page. Ask your student to show the motions we came up with to help us remember them. We also made these buses!

We also started learning how to create the best drawings at illustrators, as this is a precursor to writing skills. 

Unit Study:

We continued learning how to be a good citizen in our community by taking turns and sharing, exercising self control, being responsible, being respectful, working together in a group, and voting.

We voted today on our next compliment party. We already had extra recess on Tuesday and Monday we voted on bringing our favorite stuffed animal.

We worked in groups and created community posters.

Here we are practicing taking turns and sharing. We also were responsible and respectful when we cleaned up.

  

Math:

We learned how to sort this week. We can sort by colors, shapes, and sizes. 

 We also started math rotations. These are very similar to reading rotations so they have been a bit confused this week, but they did great today!!! 

This is our schedule for math. They have to follow this to know where to go next.

Before they play games at the red table, they complete a 'problem' in their math journal. The games played are ones I have introduced during whole group.

Yep! Math apps on the iPad.

And possibly their favorite, math tubs where they get to play!

At my table this week, I started giving the SEAL assessment, which stands for Stages of Early Arithmetic Learning. I use it to group my math groups by their number sense knowledge. We will discuss this further at our 1st conference. 

We also count the number of days we have been in school...here are some things we count.

5MTOW:

Do finger # patterns! Have your student tell you to show 1-5 with their fingers. Make sure they can do it with both hands without counting. Once that has been mastered, move on to showing 6-10-without counting too. You could even kick it up a notch and show other ways to make numbers. For example, 5 can be shown with 1 hand; 4 on 1 hand and 1 on the other;  3 on 1 hand and 2 on the other, etc.

Week of Learning 9/8

 What a great, fun group of kids! Here we are with our silly faces!

 

Reading: 

We read the patterned texts of Brown Bear, Brown Bear and talked about the correct way to hold a book and the illustrator.  

We talked about the letters A, B, C, D, E, and F briefly. We also read Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom and made these cute trees!

We learned how to rotate in stations. Ms. H put us in reading groups and we did seatwork, stations, writing at Mrs. White's table, reading at Ms. H's table, and played with iPads.

Unit Study:

We talked about how to be a good citizen in a community. 

No David helped us!

He also helped us practice gluing with a glue stick.

 We also learned about how good citizens have a job within the community so Ms. H put us to work!

Finally, we learned our class rules. I can show you the motions if you ask me!  

Math:

We learned about school tools like crayons to help us color; scissors to help us cut; glue that helps us put things together; and pencils to help us write. We also practiced using them this week.

Making these apples helped us practice how to glue with bottles and cutting.

We also started our Everyday Counts Board. We add lots of things each day we've been in school to talk about counting and numbers. 

Pennies, paper clips, straws, tallies, pennies, dots, and squares are just some of the things we count!

We also learned how to play in morning stations!

AND, we practiced playing with math tubs!

5MTOW:

Rhyme every night with your child. I tell the kids that rhyming words sound the same at the end. Say a word and have him/her say a rhyming word back to you. Kick it up a notch and say two words that rhyme. Ask if they rhyme. Then say two words that don't rhyme and ask if they rhyme. In order to be successful readers, kids MUST learn how to rhyme orally. :)
