Week of Learning 2/22

Reading:

We read some classic stories by Laura Numeroff this week. Even though they were fictional, they did not have the typical character, setting, problem and solution, which the kids picked up on quick. Instead they realized that it was a circle pattern story with the ending being exactly the same as the beginning. 

Here we create one of our favorite characters we read about and wrote what we would give them, and what they would ask for. :) They are SOOOOO cute!!! I heart them!

 

Letters and Sight Words:

Our sight words this week were great at teaching decoding strategies when we come to a word we don't know. We were able to slide through them for mom, try a different vowel sound for my, and if we knew came, we knew same.

I thought his angry eyes were funny!

Math:

We learned about weight this week!

We were measuring things in the room that were heavier or lighter than our water bottle. See how she is a scale?

We measured lots of things in the room to compare their weights and see how many cubes it actually weighed.

We also made these!

In small group math, we talked and colored number patterns on a hundreds chart. 

Unit Study:

We finished out unit on Famous Americans. These were the 6 we learned about and kids made their favorite one and wrote about him/her.

5MTOW:

Write sight words on the bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker to read before, during, after brushing teeth.

Week of Learning 2/15

Reading:

We continued learning about the story elements in fictional texts with Robert Munsch books. If you haven't read any of his texts, you should! They are hilarious!!! :)

Writing:

Since we have been reading lots of narratives, we wrote one this week!

We created something out of 1-0-0 and then wrote a story about it. Here are a few examples of each and we did an AWESOME job!!!!

Letters:

We made newts for Nn.  

Math:

We learned about temperature.

We created graphic organizers to show the temperatures in each season.
 

Unit Study:

We started our unit on Famous Americans.

5MTOW:

Name Game

Sitting at a table (or in the car), provide the group with some small blocks (one red block and several blue blocks). Designate the one red block as representing the word “bat” and the rest to represent the syllables in the children’s names. Line the blocks to represent the first child’s name (e.g., Madison=3 blocks). Show the children that each block represents a syllable in her name. Then, have the red block replace a blue block and change her name to “BATison” or “MadiBAT.” Go through each child’s name and then focus on objects around the room. (You can also do this orally.)
