Happy February!
Reading:
Over the past few weeks, we have started learning about characters and setting in fictional stories. We have been reading some traditional tales like The Three Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Chicken Little. We will also continue next week with more.
The Three Ninja Pigs is my new favorite!!! Oh my goodness was it cute! :)
Next week we will start learning about the events of a story like problem and solution.
In small group, we have all started reading and so we need to use these strategies! You can also find more information about each one under the Reading Support tab at the top of the blog or click here: http://kindergartenhanblog.blogspot.com/p/reading-strategies.html
Letters and Sight Words:
We have learned about Ss, Bb, and Pp.
Writing:
We have started writing our own narratives (stories) by writing about the character and where he/she is. Ms. H has done lots of modeling for us! (More pictures to come soon...)
We also have started a new student of the day (SOD) writing. Now we write 2 sentences about what the SOD brings in.
Math:
We learned about the various tools we use to measure things. We have had lots of fun playing with them at math tubs too!
We also started learning about height and length.
The way to start learning about height and length is to compare it to other things in terms of longest, shortest, tallest, shortest. Then we start measuring with non standard units like cubes and paperclips.
Mrs. Kayes measured us with yarn! :)
We measured our feet with paperclips...we had to use the same sized paperclips to make it standard and show that one was actually longer.
We can measure things with all kinds of things: cubes, bears, small paperclips, and large paperclips.
After we measured our feet with cubes (see below) we lined up our towers.
We compared the length of our names.
We drew pictures to show tallest to shortest.

We compared wiggly worms!
We ordered objects around the room.
We drew pictures in our journals.
We found things that were longer, shorter, or the same as our popsicle stick.
In math small group, we have been working a lot with dice and adding them together, especially with the counting on strategy.
We also have been problem solving like the following picture. This is called a joining problem with the start unknown. It was tricky today! We solve word problems like this on Fridays after we had school store,
If I had some pizzas at home and ate them, but I was still hungry so I ordered 5 more pizzas and now I have 11 pizzas, how many pizzas did I start with at home?
Laps:
One week we did laps 3 times and we had about 300.
The next week we did laps 4 times and so we estimated that we were going to do about 400 laps. We were so thrilled that we were right!
Unit Study:
We did a whole unit on matter and the three states of matter-water.
We played with water and ice lots! It was very fun! We also learned about what floats and what sinks.
Finally, we learned that water always flows down and here are our posters to show various examples of it.
Plus we made snowflakes! And it worked because we got snow! :)
Now we have started a new unit on shadows! They loved making them!
We also learned about Groundhog's Day and were excited that spring is on it's way!
5MTOW:
Play Guess My Word! It is one of their favorites at school. Slowly segment a word by sounds or syllables. Then have them blend the word back together to tell you what it is! :)
