Week of Learning 2/8

Valentine's Day!
Hope you had a great love day. :) We sure did...

Here we are making our Valentine Monster Boxes after reading this story.

 After we shared our valentines,

we also did some heart inspired math rotations.

We colored and graphed shapes.

We counted around the room.

And we measured with hearts!

The kids all rotated themselves and did great. They liked knowing they had to do all 3 rotations, but picked the order they did them in. They are growing up and turning into 1st graders!!!
Plus, we made hearts out of various math manipulatives. It was fun to see them creatively solve the problem!

Reading:
We continued reading various traditional tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We also reviewed who the characters were in each and when and where the setting was. Students can readily identify the where, but when is always tricky! We also started learning about how fictional stories usually have a problem and solution.

Letter and Sight Words:

You guessed it! This week was Rr. :)
Math:
Boy did we measure and measure and measure things!!! Check it out!

We measured with cubes things around the room. The first two pictures are how I use the iPad as a document camera! So easy!

We ordered strips, I mean flowers, and then measured how long they were.

We created other flowers and measured those.

The kids LOVED hearing your love letters to them. It was so cute to see them blush with pure joy! :)

We measured pieces of tape with cubes and popsicle sticks and then compared the results.

We picked our own things around the room to measure.

And we even measured the length and height of our Valentine Monster Boxes!

Next week we will get to measure US!

Unit Study:
We finished our unit on Shadows. We played with flashlights and created these cool sculptures. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical on how hard it would be for the kids and was SO astonished at how well they did with their creations!

5MTOW:
We have started addition number sentences in small group!
An easy way to talk about this is to use a story. I had 3 cookies for lunch. I really liked them so I ate 2 more. How many cookies did I eat?

Kids will solve these problems and not even realize they are adding!!! Continue with subtraction too! :)

Here we practiced the counting on strategy.
