Happy October!
Reading:
This week we read books by the author/illustrator Tomie dePaola. We learned another concept of print, which is we read words from top to bottom and then left to right. This directionality is so important to understand as kids learn to read and can be reinforced at home through your read alouds!
We also reviewed all the letters of the alphabet, worked on rhyming words, learned how to label our pictures, and continued with reading rotations.
Here is a picture highlight of what the kids do at seatwork:

| This the job chart. |
| Every Friday we glue our sort into our journal at school. |
| Here we read our ABC chart and our poetry folder. |
| We sort everyday! |
Unit Study:
We continued our Fall unit learning about apples and pumpkins! SO much fun! And of course craziness since Friday was when we did most of our activities and we had the early dismissal!
| We made object graphs of our apples showing that graphs can be made in 2 directions. |
| Then we made a picture graph of the apples we brought in. |
| We peeled, cored, and ate apples! |
| Inside of an apple...and our diagrams! |
| Here is our applesauce that we didn't get to eat because of the early dismissal. But we will on Monday! :) |
| We cut with plastic knives! It was so cute listening to them talk about how they have never cut before! |
| Making apple prints! |
| We had to see if it would float or sink. |
| They thought this was SO cool!!! :) |
| Then we got to touch the inside and see all the seeds. It was also comical to hear them as I cut the pumpkin open. When I did, they cheered and clapped!!!! |
| Great way to guide our prior knowledge and things learned! |
| Great books that we read! |
| We also graphed how we like to eat apples! We like them whole! |
Math:
We learned about patterns this week! We made some cool patterns and talked about how patterns are all over (shapes, colors, sounds, motions, etc.).
For example, they figured out that the months, days, and life cycle of apples and pumpkins are all patterns because they keep repeating over and over. Smart group! Continue finding and making all kinds of patterns at home.
While doing laps, we started writing out the number in expanded form! That's right! Expanded form which is a 2nd grade skill! :) We also started keeping track of the laps we do each day to compare which is more, less, etc.
Finally, in math small group, we started working on our number sense with a game that helps us subitize. Subitizing is the automatic recognition of a group of objects, like on a die. Playing any game at home with dice is a GREAT way to build this as a whole family unit! The goal is to get the kids see a 6 rolled and not have to count all those dots! :0
| They loved playing this!!! The kids roll a die and if your number is rolled, you move 1. First player to the middle wins. |
5MTOW:
Count by 5s and 10s to 100 as much as possible. Use it to time an activity, while driving in the car, etc. Add some exercises as well to get them moving, not in your car of course! :) If at home, have them count of groups of 5 or 10 objects and then count by 5s and 10s. Or you could count out the sets and have them tell you how many you have by counting by 5s and 10s.
