We are still working on our concept of print unit. Your child should know:
* what an illustrator does
* what an author does
* the parts of a book (front cover, back cover, spine, title page)
* where we start reading on a page (top) and we move left to right towards the bottom (this is called return sweep on pages with multiple lines of print
* print (or words ) give us information
* pictures tell us more about the print (words)
* the difference between a letter, a word (group of letters), and a sentence (group of words)
We studied these skills with Kevin Henkes' books.
In small group, we practiced our sort:
Letter and Sight Words:
We had the sight words I, A, the this week and learned all about the letter Ll.

Poems that we read and highlight when we find the letter L.
Our Sight Words and Letter of the Week
Our Ladybug crafts. On the back we wrote 'My Ladybug is...'
We point and read this as we enter the room!
Unit Study:
We started our science unit on the 5 senses this week. We had a lot of fun using our sense of sight, smell, taste, and touch. We will finish with hearing next week.
We played I Spy!
Our touch bags!
We tasted sugar, salt, lemon, and coffee today!
Unit Study Special Guests:
Master Gardeners associated with the Carrollton Library wanted to do an outreach program. They did a GREAT job reviewing Fall and the life cycle of a pumpkin. It was so fun having them!
Math:
We started learning about the numbers 1-5 this week and will continue with 6-10 next week. We are working on a number book!
Computer Lab:
Every week we will head to the computer lab to practice our skills!
Volunteers:
We love our volunteers. Mrs. Basham is a bus driver and she comes in once a week to help us during reading rotations! Thank you!!!
5MTOW:
Say either a word, letter, or sentence and ask your kids to tell you which it was. For example, I would say "l" and Aubrey would say letter. If I said "cat", Aubrey would say word. And if I said "I love my dog." she would say sentence. You could also take it a step further and write out the words, then count the letters in the word. Finally, take it one step further and say the sentence, but then move one block for each word said. This is tricky because they want to move two blocks if the word has two syllables! :)
